A CASE REPORT OF FOREIGN BODY IN THE THORACIC CAVITY

Abstract
A patient who had a wooden fragment in lower lobe of right lung was found on
exploratory thoracotomy and studied in this 36th Army Hospital.
A 23 years old male. enlisted man in Army, who had a past history of evidence of
falling from tree, about 5meter high, during 1960, was evacuated from the 105th Evac.
Hospital with provisional impressions of pulmonary tuberculosis, bronchiectasis or lung
abscess with chief complains of vague right chest discomfortness radiating to right
scapular region, minimally doinghemoptysis, coughing and moderate sputum and treated
with several ways such as antituberculouties, antibioties and other supportive with no
improvement.
Physical examination revealed no particular findings in considerable good health except
obscure chest findings like slightly diminished breathing sound and a scar seems to be
healed penetrating wound on right hypochondrial region.
X-ray on chest P-A view showed a density on right lower lung field with elevated
right diaphragm and slender tubular fibrotic density closely to thoracic spine was seen
on lateral view.
Serial laboratory findings were mentioned no particular results and no AFB was
found.
Exploratory thoracotomy was performed and found a wooden fragment. of 0.7§¯ in
diameter and 11§¯ in length on right lower lobe which is surrounded by dense fibrotic
tissue and accompanied pleural reaction. And right lower lobectomy was done with
successful post operative course.
